Skort skirts are an especially fun, cute and useful garment. ‘The quirky sounding name ‘skort’ is a combination of ‘shorts’ and ‘skirt’ Resembling a skirt and usually pretty short in length, divided legs grant the ability to be more active and remain slightly dressier than shorts
Where did women’s skorts originate? Well, early inspiration for the skort came from two sources. The first was culottes, initially designed for men’s military uniforms. They were worn with high knee socks or leggings, and knee-length boots. In the 19th century, women wanted skirts that were divided so they could ride horses astride instead of sidesaddle. While divided skirts were similar to a regular skirt in length and quantity of fabric, they gave women’s fashion more freedom. Gradually divided skirts used less fabric, becoming the modern pants, shorts and skort skirts worn by women today.
Some refer to any wide legged shorts as skorts, if abundant fabric makes them appear more like a skirt than a pair of shorts. Wide-legged pants that look like a skirt are more accurately known as culottes or palazzo pants, not skorts.
Two types of skort skirts are especially popular today. One a layer of fabric covering the front of the short section of the garment, from the back it looks like a regular pair of shorts. The second type of skort looks like a skirt from back and front, with a layer of fabric or a skirt covering a pair of shorts.
