We love crop tops! Such a fun feminine and subtly sexy garment. This tiny piece has become a major staple item over the last few years, but is by no means a new trend. Until relatively recently, European and American women’s fashions were meant to cover much of the body. However, in the East was a different story. Weather was warmer, it didn’t make sense to cover up so much. In India, the traditional sari is worn with a crop top underneath called a ‘choli’. Midriff-baring garments worn for belly dance in the Middle East and Asia have a long history.
In 1893, belly dancers at the World’s Fair in Chicago introduced the West to the concept of the crop top. Egyptian cabaret owner Badia Masabni hoped to entice Western tourists with the ‘bedlah’; a two-piece crop top costume.
However, it took decades before the crop top caught on with Western women’s fashion. Only in the 1940’s during WWII, fabric was being rationed so women’s fashion designers created smaller tops. Cropped tops became a characteristic look of the 1940’s, with a high collar, short sleeves, and worn with high-waisted midi skirts. This ensemble created the hourglass figure popular at the time. Vacationing in the summer, it looked chic, yet effortless. Yet many still felt the garment was too revealing. In 1945 a woman was fined for pairing shorts with a midriff-baring crop top in Central Park. A dressy, more conservative style of crop top stuck around throughout the 1950’s.
Then the rebellious style of the 60’s and ’70s took off even further during the ’80s, with it came an explosion of crop tops galore. The crop top was a glamorous sex symbol, worn by pop culture icons such as Cher and Madonna, ’80s aerobics, “Flashdance,” and “Dirty Dancing”.
The crop top trend continued heavily in pop culture all throughout the 90’s. Low-rise jeans paired with “belly shirts” were all the rage. Pop stars like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and the Spice Girls frequently incorporated the tops into their looks. A brief break in the crop top trend ended in 2011, when designers like Ferragamo, Dolce and Gabbana and Prada featured sophisticated cropped tops on their runways.
